Canoeing Makes a Great Pass time

At one time canoeing was a means of transportation, long before roads were considered. Going in a canoe saved time, waling on the land was longer and harder because of the supplies that needed to be carried. Travelling by canoe is an important part of early North American and Canadian travel.

Now a days canoeing is a hobby for some people, it is not an main source of transportation. Many of us still find it incredibly enjoyable to spend the day on the water, listening to the slop of water against the bow of the canoe or the steady drip as water escapes paddle with each stroke.

Canoeing is an excellent way to view nature in some of its most pristine glory. I've never been disappointed on any of my canoe trips. If you keep your eyes open there is always something to see.

Years ago canoes were made by hand and usually crafted from birch bark or cedar strips. Most of the experienced canoe builders are now elderly, and if their craft is not carried on, a lot of great workmanship and tradition will be lost. A well-crafted man made canoe may cost up to $4,000, expensive compared to a cheap fiberglass or plastic canoe, but will handle much easier once in the water. A man made canoe will cut through the water quicker then the mass-produced canoe.

Canoeing is an excellent way for friends and family to spend quality time together, however, many fatal accidents take place while on canoe trips every year so caution and water safety is always important. Always make sure all canoe passengers are wearing a life jacket, even if they can swim. Canoeing is a great form of exercise and is good for the environment since no motor is required. While on your canoeing trip, take all garbage home with you and leave the scenery as pleasant for the next group of canoers coming down the river as it was for yourselves.
